Your electronic devices feel that too. Cold can make the metal parts inside contract, pulling at the soldered connections like tectonic plates causing an earthquake. LCD screens aren\u2019t immune either; they can freeze and crack, turning your smart devices dumb.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heat does the opposite but is equally villainous. It makes metal parts expand, putting stress on those crucial connections. And with warmth comes moisture, electronics\u2019 arch-nemesis. It creeps into the internal parts, rusting any metal or wires it encounters. It\u2019s the kind of damage that can switch your device off permanently.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a climate-controlled storage unit, you are protecting belongings from temperature changes. What needs it most? Pretty much everything with a circuit. TVs, computers, cameras, stereos and gaming systems \u2014 all these and more can suffer from temperature tantrums and moisture madness.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"artwork\"><b>Artwork<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether it\u2019s fine frescoes or a Pinterest-inspired craft, climate-controlled storage is a good idea for artwork and art supplies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Vanessa Amor, Director of Business Development of<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/uovo.art\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UOVO<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, even if you\u2019re keeping artwork in file cabinets or poster tubes (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/stg-httpsblogstoragecom-staging.kinsta.cloud\/blog\/store-unframed-canvas-painting\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which you should<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) in your unit, it\u2019s important to maintain the unit\u2019s temperature. The best environment, she says, is about 50% humidity and a temperature between 70-75\u00b0F.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High humidity attacks canvases and their wooden frames, leading to mildew and mold, while an excessively dry environment translates into paint cracks and brittle wood.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Art doesn\u2019t take kindly to temperature swings either. Sudden rises or drops can cause paint to flake, wood to warp and paper to crumble.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond temperature and humidity, which are the usual suspects, light also poses a significant risk. It can fade pigments, weaken fabrics and deteriorate materials over time.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A climate-controlled unit will likely not have windows, keeping yet another danger at bay for paintings, prints and sculptures alike. Plus, the seal of climate-controlled self-storage units keeps out unwanted guests like rats, mice and insects that might see artwork as a meal or a home. The same goes for air pollution. Dust, pollen and harmful particles are barred entry, ensuring the artwork remains pristine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Note:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Crafting equipment, like sewing machines, can also use a little TLC (that is, tender loving climate control) as well. Your antique furniture, collectibles and delicate items, all need climate control.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Antique wood furniture<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in particular needs special care. The ideal humidity level for preserving such items is between 35% and 65%, with room temperature best kept between 68 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cToo much exposure to extreme temperatures and humidity can start the oxidation process, which ruins the metals used in <\/span><b>coins<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d explains Rod Gillis, Education Director at the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.money.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Numismatic Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Copper and silver in particular are at risk of tarnishing. \u201cWhile some collectors enjoy toning, it\u2019s a destructive force that will eventually cause the coin to become very dark,\u201d says Gillis.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nick Vespucci, owner of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nicksstamps.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nick\u2019s Stamps<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, says storing a <\/span><b>stamp collection<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a climate-controlled storage unit is important especially if you live in a region where the humidity is high all year. \u201cI would never store a collection in a room that isn\u2019t climate-controlled. Once stamps have been exposed to high temperature and humidity, [they] will curl and stick.\u201d Irresponsible storage and maintenance of your collection will damage it, meaning it will ultimately depreciate.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Comics, <\/strong>much like the pages of a stamp album, the pages of comic books are also susceptible to damage if left in an environment where moisture can find its way to the pages.\u201cStoring your comics safely is key to preserving your collecting,\u201d says\u00a0<a title=\"ComicSpectrum.com\" href=\"https:\/\/comicspectrum.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow external noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">ComicSpectrum.com<\/a>\u2018s Bob Bretall. \u201cStorage units are a great alternative to home storage if your collection is growing.\u201dComic books\u2014usually those\u00a0that are older and rarer\u2014can\u2019t handle moisture, so Bretall says using a unit equipped with climate\u00a0control that can moderate humidity is a\u00a0good option for protecting your collection.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"musical-instruments\"><b>Musical Instruments<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Musical instruments, though sometimes large, are very delicate and need to be handled with great care. Whether it\u2019s short-term or long-term storage for instruments, humidity and temperature control is a must.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Pianos<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 These big beauties can get really upset with too much moisture or dry air. Imagine the wood warping and the strings getting all rusty. Not a pretty sight. \u201cWith the average piano having approximately 15,000 glued joints, it isn\u2019t glue anymore if the piano is stored in a humid climate,\u201d says Dan Loibl, owner of<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.danthemovingmanwa.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dan The Moving Man<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Spokane Valley, WA.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Guitars<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 Too dry or too damp, and those strings might just snap in protest, leaving your guitar feeling a bit&#8230; unstrung. \u201cThe good folks at<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.martinguitar.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">C.F. Martin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recommend temperatures between 72-77\u00b0F and a humidity level of 45-55%,\u201d says Billy Penn, owner of<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/300guitars.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">300 Guitars<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Toms River, NJ.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Brass<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/stg-httpsblogstoragecom-staging.kinsta.cloud\/blog\/how-to-store-a-trumpet\/\">Trumpets<\/a> and other brass instruments don\u2019t like being too hot or too wet. Though a properly cleaned, oiled and packed trumpet is generally unaffected by weather, a trumpet in long-term storage could have issues. \u201cMaterials like felt, rubber and cork that are used in some trumpets may break down faster when exposed to extreme temperatures,\u201d says John Snell, co-owner of<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bobreeves.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bob Reeves Brass Mouthpieces<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Valencia, CA.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Percussion<\/strong> &#8211; Let\u2019s use a standard\u00a0<a title=\"Protecting Your Piano in Storage\" href=\"https:\/\/stg-httpsblogstoragecom-staging.kinsta.cloud\/blog\/protecting-piano-storage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">piano<\/a>\u00a0as an example of a percussion instrument in storage\u00a0(It\u2019s also a string instrument, too, which means it needs extra care). Pianos can\u00a0be damaged very easily by extreme temperatures and humidity, both of which can ruin\u00a0a piano\u2019s\u00a0strings, keys, and wooden exterior over time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHumidity is a piano\u2019s worst enemy,\u201d says\u00a0Dan Loibl, owner of\u00a0Dan The Piano Man\u00a0in Spokane Valley, Wash. \u201cWith the average piano having approximately 15,000 glued joints, it isn\u2019t glue anymore if the piano is stored in a humid climate. The strings are also not rust-proof by any means. If not stored in a climate-controlled unit, they can become rusted and corroded.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA climate-controlled storage unit is important for a piano because [temperature]\u00a0can affect the shape and condition of the instrument,\u201d says\u00a0Sal Margaglione, President of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fatherandsonne.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Father &amp; Son Moving and Storage<\/a>\u00a0in Wallingford, Conn. \u201cFor example, if it is made of wood, the wood will expand or contract in either hot or cold weather.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Woodwind<\/strong> &#8211; Maintaining humidity levels\u00a0is essential when it comes to storing woodwind instruments, says Nathan Pietz, Sales and School Liaison at\u00a0<a title=\"Funky Munky Music\" href=\"https:\/\/funkymunkymusic.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow external noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">Funky Munky Music<\/a>\u00a0in Shawnee, Kan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe dangers of storing woodwinds and other wooden instruments is that they have a sweet spot between 40-55% humidity,\u201d says Pietz. \u201cHumidity less than 40% will cause the instrument to dry out, and the wood parts can shrink and can cause the instrument to crack. The pieces can also become ill-fitted and uncomfortable to play.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pietz says that musicians who store\u00a0woodwind instruments like clarinets, oboes, and flutes need\u00a0to be mindful of humidity levels that exceed 55% as well.\u00a0\u201c[Too much]\u00a0humidity can cause the pads of the instrument\u00a0to swell and expand. In extreme cases, mold can begin to build up inside of the instrument because of the moisture.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"wine\"><b>Wine<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fluctuating temperatures can accelerate wine aging and can give wine an oxidized, metallic taste, according to Patrick Gilroy, co-owner of<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/winestoragebellevue.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wine Storage Bellevue<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Bellevue, Wash. For collectors who\u2019ve invested a lot of time and money in growing their wine collections, spoiling due to improper storage would be a nightmare.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The thing is, wine loves to chill at a constant cozy temperature, ideally around 55\u00b0F. Humidity matters too. It keeps the cork in perfect condition, sealing the deal to keep the air out and the fine flavors in. Aim for a humidity range of 50 to 80 percent. Wine doesn\u2019t enjoy the spotlight either. Plastic bags aren\u2019t any better since they trap moisture like a sauna. Instead, opt for plastic bins that snap shut, protecting your wardrobe from humidity, pests and dust. Those UV rays can bleach the life out of covers and turn crisp, white pages yellow. For documents and books, a comfortable<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lib.uchicago.edu\/about\/directory\/departments\/pres\/resources\/caring-your-books\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">70 degrees Fahrenheit with 50% relative humidity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And consistency is key. A climate-controlled storage unit will prevent warping, cracking and other heartbreaking damage. At the same time, keeping your items out of the sunlight and away from harsh indoor lights will protect them from fading and deterioration.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"photographs\"><b>Photographs<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ever seen photos stuck together as if they\u2019ve decided to become one? That\u2019s high humidity working its mischief. Once they\u2019re stuck, trying to separate them might ruin the images forever.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High temperatures and\/or too much light? Photos will fade away and age faster. The vibrant colors and sharp details can wash out, leaving behind only a shadow of the original memory. A climate-controlled storage unit at a temperature between 65 and 70 degrees.
